Steven David Vorhies, age 66, passed away on March 8, 2022. Steve came into the world on October 6, 1955, in Newton, Iowa, the first child of David and Mikelle Vorhies. He had the most beautiful eyes and eyelashes that were his most striking feature all his life.
Steve had special needs and overcame many obstacles that became strengths most of us can not imagine. After graduating from Newton High School in 1977, he worked many jobs through Progress Industries, eventually being hired by HyVee where he was a loyal employee until his retirement.
He loved sports and was an unwavering fan of the Newton Cardinals, Iowa Hawkeyes, Greenbay Packers and of course his Chicago Cubbies. Woodland Park was his favorite place to be cheering on is boys, the Newton Cardinals Baseball Team. In 2015, the team gave him one of his greatest honors, inducting him into the Newton Cardinals Hall of Fame as a Super Fan. Steve could also be found at the Cardinal Football Games especially when his cousins were playing. Always a proud Newtonite, he was made to feel special by his community.
A doctor at the Mayo Clinic once told Steve he was a “Miracle Man”. He wore the name as a badge of courage.
Steve is survived by sisters Nancy (Don) Ross of Newton, Susan Jones of Des Moines, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceeded in death his parents and brothers-in-law Brian Kauzlarich and Ronnie Jones. Along with his famous wry sense of humor our Miracle Man will be missed.
A celebration of life will be held Saturday, March 19, 2022, at 1 p.m. at the Newton Arboretum. Donations in memory of Steve can be made to the Newton High Athletic Department and Progress Industries.
