Terry Joe VeVerka, 79, of Newton died on Sunday, January 16, 2022, at his home. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, January 21, 2022, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. The family will greet friends from 10:00 a.m., Friday until the time of service at the funeral home. Memorials to the Izaak Walton League or the Salvation Army Loan Closet may be left at the funeral home.
Terry, the son of Junior Orville and Catherine Jane (McMaster) VeVerka, was born on February 15, 1942 in Newton. He grew up in Newton and graduated from Newton High School. Terry was united in marriage with Carol Jean Filson on December 13, 1959 in Newton. Terry worked as a machinist at Winpower, Fisher Controls, Thombert, and Midwest Manufacturing, retiring in 2004. After retirement he returned to Thombert part-time. Terry was a member of the Church of Christ from a young age and had been a church leader which included preaching for many decades. He later joined the First Evangelical Lutheran Church. Terry was a member of the Izaak Walton League, Odd Fellows, and GMP Labor Union. Terry enjoyed riding and showing horses, fishing, and pheasant hunting. Friday Maid-Rite nights and after church lunches on Sunday were always enjoyed by the whole family. Terry worked hard on his small orchard of fruit trees by his home. He was a constant provider and protector of his family.
Terry is survived by his wife, Carol VeVerka of Newton; children, Cary (Steve) Rutherford of Newton, Cindy “Sissy” VeVerka of Newton, Ronda (Scott) Forrman of Green Camp, Ohio, and Jerred (Michelle) VeVerka of Newton; his 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and brother, Jim (Mary Joyce) VeVerka of Ames. He was preceded in death by his mother and step-father, Catherine (Thomas) Kennedy; father, Junior VeVerka; parents-in-law, Ralph and Ruth Filson; and a great-grandson, Barret Uresti.
