Sharon Kay Smith, 77, of Newton died on Tuesday, January 11, 2022, at MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center. The family will greet friends from 5-7 p.m., Wednesday, January 19, 2022, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. Memorials in Sharon’s name (checks made payable to Chris Brain) may be left at the funeral home.
Sharon, the daughter of Robert and Wilma (Tool) McMaster, was born on March 14, 1944 in Newton. She graduated from Newton High School in 1962. Sharon worked for the Newton school system in the Head Start program and later was the head cook at Newton Motor Inn for several years. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Rebekah Lodge. Sharon enjoyed ceramics, sewing, doing word searches, and her dog, Daisy Lou.
Sharon is survived by her children, Chris (Shelly) Brain of Knoxville, Kathy Ambrose of Des Moines, Patty Retzloff of Newton, and Robert L. Smith of Newton; grandchildren, Alexa (Alex) Bebout, Megan Brain, Amanda Gilliland, Samantha (Trin) Barnes, Kelsey Ambrose, Jacob (Raphael) Coffman, Jordan (Cheyenne) Welch, Jackson Anderson, Kye Smith, and Stevie Smith; her 10 great-grandchildren and one more on the way; siblings, Shirley (James) Fox of Newton, Judy (David) Hoyt of Newton, and Cindy (Brad) Rollins of Bastrop, Texas; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; son-in-law, Richard Ambrose; and her cat, Boo Boo.
