George Michael Shook, 74, of Newton died on Friday, November 12, 2021, at his home. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, November 18, 2021, at Community Heights Church. Friends are invited to join the family for a luncheon at the Community Heights Church following the service. Memorials to the Pregnancy Center of Central Iowa or Discover Hope may be left at the funeral home or the church the day of the service.
George, the son of Kenneth and Nellie (Van Veen) Shook, was born on February 20, 1947, in Grinnell. He attended Grinnell High School. George served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. Throughout his life, George lived in Grinnell and Des Moines, but Newton served as his home for 32 years. In 2005, George retired after 30 years of working for the cities of Newton and Johnston. In April of the same year, George was united in marriage with Shirley Middleton in Newton. George enjoyed spending time with his family, playing cards, and photography.
George is survived by his wife, Shirley Shook of Newton; daughters, Michell Shook of Des Moines, Melissa DeLisle of Des Moines, and Angie (Andy) Ellingson of Bettendorf; grandchildren, Jeremy Mann, Blade Street, Anthony Jr. (Stephanie) DeLisle, Dante DeLisle, David DeLisle, Alissa DeLisle, Grant Ellingson, Lauren Ellingson, and Rachel Ellingson; brothers, Kenneth (Joyce) Shook, Gary Shook, and Jeff (Janet) Shook; sister-in-law, Caroline Shook; and his two beloved cats, Homer and Sunny B. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Gene Shook.
