Gerald “Jerry” Clement, 83, of Newton, died Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2021, at Unity Point Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. No services are scheduled at this time. Memorials in Jerry’s name (checks made payable to Karla Clement) may be left at the funeral home or mailed to the family.
Jerry, the son of Elmer D. and Bernice V. (Carrigan) Clement, was born Oct. 17, 1937, in Newton. He grew up in Newton and was a lifelong resident of Jasper County, also living in Mingo and Colfax. On Dec. 27, 1986, Jerry was united in marriage with Karla Webster in Newton. He worked for the Jasper County Highway Department and also for Kimberley Farms for more than 30 years. He was a farmer at heart. Jerry also enjoyed fishing, camping, going to the races and cheering on the St. Louis Cardinals.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Karla Clement of Newton; sons, Gregg (Missy) Clement of Ohio, Les Clement of Missouri and Mike Clement of Missouri; his step-children, Steve Ayers of Mingo, Julie McWhirter of Baxter, Lisa Hansen (Ron Dilly) of Collins and Mark (Kim) Ayers of Colfax; nine grandchildren; his 13 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Dorothy Clement of Newton; his nieces and nephews; and very special friends, Jack and Karla Merten of Mitchellville and Rick and Martha Kimberley of Farrar. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Jim and Russ Clement; daughter, Tina Rudolph; son-in-law, Brian McWhirter; brothers, Francis ”Bud” Clement and Robert “Bob” Clement; and sister, Opal “Marie” Brier.
