Dorothy Mae Nelson, 92, passed peacefully in her sleep Saturday, Dec. 26, 2020.
Dorothy Mae (Anderson) Nelson was born April 10, 1928, in Ivy, along with her twin sister Darlene Faye (Anderson) Bozarth, to William “Jake” and Nota Dorothy (Hick) Anderson. She graduated from Newton High School in 1946. She was a longtime resident of Jasper County until she moved to Mesa, Ariz., in 2014. On Oct. 11, 1947, Dorothy was united in marriage with Harold Bernie Nelson.
Dorothy worked at Maytag Washing Machine Co., Maytag Blue Cheese Co. and was a grocery checker at Hy-Vee Food Stores from 1959 to 1972. Dorothy enjoyed playing cards, gardening, camping, blue grass jam sessions, various crafts such as macrame, playing bingo and slot machines. She especially enjoyed visits and get-togethers with friends and family in Iowa and Arizona. Dorothy was a member of the VFW Auxiliary in Newton.
Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Barbara (Doug Brown) Mackerman; grandsons, Matthew Mackerman of Mesa, Ariz., Chad (Tiffani) Nelson of Gilbert, Ariz., and Brad (Shaena) Nelson of Mesa, Ariz.; step-granddaughter, Anna (Junior) Wilmont of Indianapolis, Ind.; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold in November 2002; her son, Ragan in April 2019; brothers, R. Henry Anderson and Glenn Anderson; sisters, Darlene Bozarth, Florence Minenga and Mildred Ray; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will begin at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 20 at Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. Burial of ashes will follow at Newton Union Cemetery.
