Judith “Judy” Diane Spain, 78, of Newton, died Tuesday, June 15, 2021, at Accura Health Care of Newton East. A funeral service will begin at 2 p.m. Friday, June 18 at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. The family will greet friends from 1 p.m. until the time of service and again after the service with a coffee time at the funeral home. Memorials to the American Cancer Society may be left at the funeral home.
Judy, the daughter of John and Minnie (Uitermarkt) Lankford, was born March 10, 1943, in Des Moines. She was a lifelong resident of Newton and graduated from Newton High School in 1961. On Aug. 24, 1960, Judy was united in marriage with James “Jim” Spain in Newton. Judy worked at Walmart as a jewelry specialist for 19 years, retiring in 2008. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church. Judy enjoyed birds, especially cardinals and hummingbirds, flower gardening and reading. She loved spoiling her grandsons.
Judy is survived by her husband, Jim Spain of Newton; two sons, Jeffrey (Pamela) Spain of McHenry, Ill., and Jon (Victoria) Spain of Marion; two grandsons, Ian Spain and Duncan Spain of Marion; and a half-sister, Sandra Welborn of Des Moines. She was preceded in death by her mother, Minnie Findley; father, John Lankford; and a brother, Roger Lankford.
