Daryl Wood, 91, of Monroe, passed away Monday, Dec. 21, 2020, at MercyOne in Des Moines. A celebration of Daryl’s life will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Jan. 22 at the Monroe Presbyterian Church. Burial will take place at Silent City Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Monroe Ambulance and condolences may be left for the family at coburnfuneralhomes.com.
The son of Dale and Lela (Welcher) Wood, Daryl was born Sept. 29, 1929, in Newton. He graduated from Monroe High School. On Dec. 4, 1948, he was united in marriage to Alice Lou Thomasson. To this union three children were born, Kirby, Jody and Matthew. Daryl enjoyed going to the Sprint Car races in Knoxville every week and was lucky enough to get into the suites the last two years that he was able to attend. He always enjoyed being outdoors, helping with the garden, house projects or with fixing cars. He was excellent at giving directions. His greatest joy, however, was the time spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Those left to honor his memory include his three children, Kirby (Marla) Wood, Jody Wood and Matt (Deb) Wood; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Preceding Daryl in death were his parents; wife, Alice in 2018; a brother, Donald Wood; and a sister, Dixie Cowden.
