Jasper County vacates portion of E. 64th St. S. or ‘Sioux Ave.’

Following the removal of Level C road, the county wants to remove nearby bridge

The Jasper County Board of Supervisors set public hearing dates for a proposed road vacation at East 64th Street South. About 0.4 miles of the road is proposed to be vacated, provided property owners agree with it.

Jasper County has officially vacated a portion of East 64th Street South about 0.1 miles south of South 96th Avenue East, also known as Sioux Avenue.

Before the board of supervisors could vote on vacating the road, it had to hold a public hearing to allow for residents to give their input. However, no citizens had attended the public hearing or, at least, spoke for or against the road vacation. Jasper County Engineer Michael Frietsch said it only affects a short stretch.

Classified as a Level C road, this portion of East 64th Street South measures about 0.4 miles just past a bridge. Frietsch said the county will also remove that bridge. Adjoining landowners will be contacted on proceeding forward with the remaining portion of the Level C road and whether to install a field entrance.

“We did get written letters from the property owners that are basically impacted,” Frietsch said. “We also sent out a certified letter and we know that they all received that letter. The only person to not receive that letter, the Woodys, have not acknowledged receipt of that certified letter. But we did send them that.”

From what Frietsch has gathered, no one is really concerned about the county vacating that section of road. Supervisor Brandon Talsma said since there was landowner consent and the county did not hear back from the public regarding this matter, the board went ahead and waived subsequent hearings.

The supervisors voted 3-0 to adopt the road vacation.
