Additional concrete work was approved for Westwood Golf Course, which will be built before the completion of the clubhouse’s patio and exterior improvements. The Newton City Council voted unanimously in favor of approving an almost $11,000 contract to construct the sidewalk/cart path leading from the clubhouse.
The city prepared plans for the project and received four quotes from contractors: $10,958 from Newton-based Jerry Keenan Concrete, $12,378.24 from Lynnville-based Pour Boy Construction, $13,572 from Kellogg-based Central Iowa Excavation and $21,040.43 from Monroe-based Karl Peters Construction.
The low bid from Jerry Keenan Concrete was accepted. Estimates for the concrete work projected it would cost $15,550, putting the project about a few grand under budget. City of Newton will be paying for the project using 2024 bond proceeds and future 2025 bond proceeds.
Several other projects have been completed at the golf course clubhouse, including asbestos abatement, demolition, site grading, utilities, footing and shell and interior improvements. This concrete project will complete the exterior access improvements, which features a 5-foot ADA compliant sidewalk.
According to the contract with Jerry Keenan Concrete, the contractor will construct a 153-square-yard cart path, a 45-square-yard sidewalk and a 7-square-yard pad. The contract states the concrete work is to be completed before May 1. If not, the contractor is will be fined $200 for each calendar day.
Council member Randy Ervin spoke favorably to the work going on at the golf course, but especially the new clubhouse. He said, “If you have not been out to the new clubhouse it is pretty neat to sit there. Look out over that No. 1 hole, it is just beautiful. Awesome move for our city.”
