Save the date! Newton Fest to feature numerous activities in town June 13-14

Damon Dotson to headline Maytag Bowl concert earlier than in past years

Damon Dotson, a Des Moines-based musician, performs the Maytag Bowl during the last night of Newton Fest on Saturday, June 10 at Maytag Park.

Preparations are already underway for this upcoming Newton Fest, which means it is a good time to start marking your calendars.

Newton Fest is scheduled for Friday, June 13 and Saturday, June 14. Activities take place all over the city, including the library, the American Legion, Legacy Plaza, Community Heights Alliance Church and Maytag Park. Several of the events and activities during Newton Fest are free and family-friendly.

Headlining this year’s Newton Fest concert at the Maytag Bowl is none other than Damon Dotson, whose contract was officially approved by the city council this past week. Unlike past years, the concert will start sooner at noon so as not to conflict with the musical performances at Fierce Faith Music Festival that same day.

“Always popular,” Newton Mayor Evelyn George said of Dotson, who is no stranger to performing in city events. “He’s got a lot of local fans and area fans.”

Council members also passed a resolution reducing single-day admission prices to Maytag Pool during the Saturday of Newton Fest. The regular single-day admission is $6, but the resolution authorizes pool staff to charge $3 to enter. Advantage Credit Union will also be sponsoring a free pool party the day before.

Other free events include a magic show by Jonathan May at the Newton Public Library and the popular UV Foam Party, morning yoga, Safety Fest and the Family Fun Zone all in Maytag Park. Many other activities like visiting the Newton Chamber car show and sixth anniversary of Gezellig Brewing have no entry cost.

Thunder Nites will also be hosted at the American Legion Post 111 during Newton Fest. To see the full list of activities, visit www.newtonfest.org.
