Congratulations to Oaklynn Libke, 3, and Huntley Libke, 1 1/2 years old, on completing the Newton Public Library Iowa’s 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program. Oaklynn’s favorite books are any by Sandra Boynton and Huntley’s favorite book is “Where Is the Green Sheep?” by Mem Fox.
Oaklynn and Huntley each received a Dr. Seuss bag full of items to prepare them for kindergarten, along with a book to keep. They are off to a great start for school, as studies show that being read to daily at home is a key predictor of future success in school. Plus, reading together every day is a great way to bond with your child. The 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program may sound daunting, but it’s manageable — just one book a day for three years will get you to the 1,000-book mark. This ongoing program at the Newton Public Library is open for registration as soon as your child is born. When you register, you’ll receive a canvas 1,000 Books Bag, perfect for carrying library books and a board book to keep.
