The Newton Fire Department has received a $5,000 grant from the Jasper Community Foundation to purchase dual-certified gear designed for use during grass fires and vehicle accidents.
This project was championed by Captain Ryan Volk, who was inspired after attending a fire service conference in Indianapolis in 2023. There, he learned about the risks of using traditional structural fire gear in nonstructure-related incidents like grass fires and vehicle accidents. Structural gear, while effective for fighting building fires, is heavier, retains more heat, and poses safety concerns in roadway incidents.
One key concern is head protection. A national study shared at the conference revealed that standard fire helmets often do not stay in place during collisions, offering limited protection. In contrast, dual-certified helmets with multi-point contact systems—similar to bicycle helmets—are more likely to remain secure and offer greater safety.
Thanks to the grant, the department purchased nine sets of this lighter, safer dual-certified gear, including helmets. The gear is now in use by on-duty firefighters and has already been worn during grass fires, vehicle accidents, and training scenarios. Firefighters report noticeable improvements in comfort, reduced heat stress, and easier mobility.
The Newton Fire Department plans to expand this initiative in the coming years, with the goal of outfitting every firefighter with a set of dual-certified gear.
