Vivian Branderhorst, 4, just completed the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program at the Newton Public Library. Vivian’s older brother finished the program a couple of years ago, so now they will both have their picture on the Library’s Wall of Fame. Vivian’s favorite books are any books about unicorns. Vivian received a bag full of items to prepare her for kindergarten, along with a book to keep and will have a great jump start for school, as studies show that being read to daily at home is a key predictor of future success in school. Plus, reading together every day is a great way to bond with your child. The 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program may sound daunting, but it’s manageable — just one book a day for three years will get you to the 1,000 book mark. This ongoing program at the Newton Public Library is open for registration as soon as your child is born. When you register, you’ll receive a canvas 1,000 Books Bag, perfect for carrying library books and a board book to keep. Stop by the library to register, or sign up at https://bit.ly/1000booksNPL.
