In partnership with the Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division, the Newton Police Department recently conducted the first round of tobacco compliance checks to ensure local businesses are following Iowa law and are not selling tobacco or vape products to those under the age of 21.
NPD officers visited 25 local businesses Jan. 20 and tried to purchase tobacco products with the help of an underage volunteer customer. All of the businesses checked the minor ID and none of the businesses sold tobacco to the minor.
The goal of the program is to educate clerks, maintain a compliant retail environment in our community and keep tobacco and vapor products out of the hands of our underage individuals. If any of businesses sold to the minor, they would be in violation and it would be reported to the Iowa Alcohol Beverages Division. The businesses may receive further licensing sanctions as a result of their non-compliance.
“We are pleased to see all Newton businesses following state law by checking IDs. We appreciate their help in limiting access to tobacco products by minors, ultimately leading to a safer and healthier community,” Newton Police Chief Burdess said.
