Jasper County deputy and telecommunicator help deliver baby on I-80

Both mother and baby were transported to Grinnell hospital and are doing well

Two individuals working for Jasper County law enforcement assisted in the birth of a healthy baby girl alongside Interstate 80.

According to a Facebook post made by the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office earlier this week, dispatchers received a 911 call at 3:22 a.m. on Sept. 27 from a man reporting his wife was in labor. The couple was traveling I-80 East when the dispatcher on duty instructed them to pull off to the side of the road.

While waiting for first responders to arrive near the 174 mile marker, an EMT-certified deputy for the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office arrived on scene.

Together, the deputy and the dispatcher assisted with a successful delivery. Both the mother and the baby were transported to Unity Point Health - Grinnell Regional Medical Center by the Grinnell Fire Department. The sheriff’s office said mother and baby are doing well.
