Newton student charged for allegedly threatening teacher

District says incident was unrelated to previous school threats this past week

Newton Community School District is filing charges against a student accused of making threatening comments to a staff member, according to communications released by the district on ParentSquare. Law enforcement was contacted the day of the incident on Sept. 19 and responded to the building where it occurred.

“While this situation is unrelated to the ones previously communicated on, it is another reminder that threatening comments and behaviors are not acceptable and will be addressed with the highest level of priority,” Superintendent Tom Messinger said in his message to Cardinal families.

The incident was a comment made directly at an individual staff member and does not indicate a threat targeting a building or student population.

“Again, we remind everyone that if you see or hear anything which is troubling, make sure to report it,” Messinger said. “You can either report it through the Newton Police Department or through the Safe+Sound Iowa School Threat Reporting Tool.”

Messenger also encouraged families to use ParentSquare, the latest communications tool used by the school district.
