Woodland Park’s disc golf course to receive more holes

Disc golfers have a new course in Newton to use for competitions. The Newton City Council on Nov. 20 voted 5-1 — with Randy Ervin voting no — in favor of upgrading the disc golf course at Woodland Park, a move that will no doubt please the golfers who frequent Maytag Park for leisure and competitive play.

The upgrades to the disc golf course in Woodland Park are included in the capital improvement plan for FY24-FY28. Currently, the 12-hole course is not ideal for hosting tournaments. Staff recommended council to authorize the purchase of disc golf baskets and sleeves. It would cost $7,447 out of the general fund.

Woodland Park would then have 18 holes on its disc golf course. Input from the disc golf community supports the city’s plan to expand the course.

Additional quotes were not obtained because city staff intends to have all of the city’s disc golf baskets of the same type and made by the same manufacturer. These baskets are sold directly from the manufacturer Innova Disc Golf from Rock Hill, S.C. The parks department’s groundskeepers will install the baskets.

According to city documents, no final plan has been prepared for the additional holes. But staff intends to work with the local disc golf groups to do so and revise some of the existing holes to better utilize that part of the park. Staff will also look at using areas outside the three baseball fields’ outfield fences for more holes.
