Newton is always finding ways of showing off its “Red Pride,” but it was on full display during the Newton Homecoming Parade on Sept. 28 in the town square. Cars, floats and walkers trekked from the high school to the historic downtown wearing the signature red and black Cardinal attire. The blaring trumpets from the marching band and the rhythmic taps from the drum line reverberated throughout the parade route. Cheerleaders shouted out chants and kids scrambled for candy.
Of course, it all culminated in a community pep rally on the west side of the town square. With the football team on a flatbed and the cheer and dance squads out in front, the community found their Cardinal spirit and got amped up for upcoming game against Pella. The elbow-room only space shows Newton is proud of its schools and its Cardinal heritage. The footballers who get the high-ground view of the rally not only see their support, they feel it.
This is our hometown tradition.
Damn, it’s good to be a Cardinal.
