The annual CWS/CROP Walk to alleviate hunger in the United States and overseas will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 1 on the west side of the Jasper County Courthouse lawn, according to Barry Hurto, county chairman for the event. Registration will commence at 1:30 p.m.

“Church congregations who have participated in the past have already been given publicity materials to promote the event, but I would like to invite new congregations and independent walkers to take part as well. If you would like publicity materials such as posters, bulletin inserts and collection envelopes, contact me after 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at 641-792-6971, or by email at beh050219.com and I will be happy to provide them to you,” Hurto said.

“One of the areas being targeted for help this year is that portion of Hawaii that has been devastated by the recent volcanic eruptions. Also, I want to point out that a portion of the total pledges collected will remain in Jasper County to supplement local food banks.

“If you haven’t already taken part, we encourage you to consider doing so. It’s a great family activity and involves a route consisting of a distance of about 1.5 miles. Walkers collect pledges in advance and will turn them in on Oct. 1. Pledges can also be made to walkers online. Following the event, a coffee time will be held at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 223 E. Fourth St. N., for all who participate,” Hurto said.
