RSVP collects items during MLK Day of Service

On Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “Day of Service” Jan. 16, Retired and Senior Volunteers (RSVP) set up at Hy-Vee and Theisen’s in Newton to collect much needed “personal care items” for the local Salvation Army. RSVP chose to collect “personal care items” because these items are often overlooked and most carry a higher price tag than other food pantry items.

The community response to this cause is always overwhelming and the generosity seems to grow each year. RSVP appreciates Hy-Vee and Theisen’s for hosting the volunteers and is grateful for volunteers: Violet Bakalar, Sandy Bouck, Wauneta Davis, Theresa Goeke, Kathy McFarling, Larry Pauley, Brenda Penning, Linda Schafer and Loretta Tool.

MLK Day of Service is one day of many, that RSVP volunteers are active in the community. You will find RSVP volunteers helping in other ways throughout the year. Whether it’s reading to a student with its HEART program (Help Engage a Reader Today), transporting eligible clients to medical appointments in or out of the county with the Jasper County RIDE program, or offering free tax preparation services for low and middle income families and elderly clients at DMACC (coming to you beginning Feb. 1), these volunteers are there, filling a need. The volunteers exchange monthly letters with Baxter third-grade students and help the City of Newton ensure the warning sirens are in good working order and assist at MercyOne Newton Medical Center and Jasper County Elderly Nutrition. They also visit shut-ins and help with many other unsung programs in Jasper County.

Volunteers are always needed. You can make a difference starting here in Jasper County. Visit Donita or Denice at RSVP in the Iowa State University Extension and Outreach office at DMACC or call 641-792-6433.
