Although the snow didn’t stick around to see the New Year, winter is far from over in Jasper County. Activities such as cross country skiing, show shoeing and ice fishing are just a few of the fun experiences offered through Jasper County Conservation while it is cold outside.
“The most popular parks for cross country skiing and snow shoeing include Jacob Krumm Nature Preserve, Mariposa Recreation Area, Uhlenhopp Arboretum and the Chichaqua Valley Trail,” Jasper County Naturalist Greg Oldsen said. “These areas, along with Ashton Wildwood Park, are also great places for winter birding.”
For those looking for a little help getting started in a winter activity or those just wanting to participate in a group, county conservation offers opportunities throughout the season to learn from the naturalist.
“As of right now, we have four regular cross country ski and snow shoe events planned for this winter and an outdoor rec day,” Oldsen said.
The cross country ski and show shoe events are planned from 1 to 3 p.m. on Jan. 14 and 28 and Feb. 4 and 11. Participants can check in behind the Jasper County Armory Building at 1030 W. Second St. S., then head to Maytag Park to take on the many hills or keep it more level on the west side of the park. The equipment rental fee for those needing gear is $5 per person.
The conservation Outdoor Rec Day is scheduled from 1 to 4 p.m. Jan. 21 at the Newton Izaak Walton League, 889 Hwy F36 W. The event includes cross country skiing, snowshoeing and ice fishing. The event is $5 per person.
“Jacob Krumm Nature Preserve and Mariposa Recreation Area both offer easy access to anyone wanting to ice fish here in Jasper County,” Oldsen said. “Please remember that no ice is safe ice and to make sure and check ice thickness with a spud bar or auger as you go.”
He said to also be aware that during heavy snow events and thawing periods some gates may be closed at the parks. Walk-in access is still available in these areas but the county asks people to please not block the gates with a vehicle.
There are many great sledding hills across the county but a stand out location is at Sunset Park in Newton. Hundreds of kids, young and old, flock to the site each year to fly on their saucers or take a trip together on a toboggan.
As Iowans have learned, all events are weather permitting. Visit the county conservation Facebook page for updates as the time comes closer.
