Semi accident causes temporary road closure on Hwy 224

Roadway reopened almost seven hours after the Nov. 15 crash

The driver of a semi truck was transported to an area hospital Nov. 15 following an accident on Highway 224. At 10:31 a.m., the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office received a call of an accident eastbound on Interstate 80 near mile marker 173, which responding deputies located below the interstate on Highway 224.

According to the incident report, the accident with the semi, which was hauling a meat product, caused Highway 224 to be closed for an extended period of time. The Iowa Department of Transportation was contacted to assist with the closure and Central Iowa Towing was used to clean up the roadway and remove the vehicle from the scene.

The road remained closed until 5 p.m. when it was fully opened for travel.

The accident caused considerable damage to the cable guard rail and the cement walls under the bridge at mile marker 173. The bridge was found to have no damage.

Along with the sheriff’s department, IDOT and Central Iowa Towing, Kellogg Fire and EMS and Newton EMS also assisted with the call along with Dodds Trash and Hauling and Gralnek-Dunitz to help with clean up at the scene.

This incident remains under investigation by the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office and charges are pending. The Iowa State Patrol also conducted a Level 3 inspection of the semi that was involved.
