Newton schools celebrate National School Lunch Week

To recognize the National School Lunch Program, serving nearly 30 million children each day, Newton schools will celebrate National School Lunch Week Oct. 10-14. The fun and creative campaign theme, “Peace, Love & School Lunch,” highlights the importance of a healthy school lunch to a student’s success both in and out of the classroom.

Research shows children are getting their healthiest meals at school. National School Lunch Week will highlight the nutritious foods available daily at Newton schools. NCSD serves a variety of meal options, fruits, & veggies during National School Lunch week, as well as throughout the year.

“School lunches offer students fruits and vegetables, whole grains and milk, and meet federal nutrition standards limiting fat, calories and sodium,” Julie Miller, food service supervisor, said. “National School Lunch Week helps us educate parents and students about all the wonderful benefits of our lunch program.”

To celebrate, NCSD is pleased to have a variety of ‘Celebrity Servers’ throughout the week. They will be serving lunch to students within the district. These servers come from within the community, representing the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department, members of the Newton City Council and Mayor’s Office, the NCSD School Board, NCSD Administration as well as others.  If you would like to be a celebrity server, contact Julie Miller, food service supervisor, to volunteer, at 641-792-5797, extension 2001 or millerj@newton.k12.ia.us.

The federally funded National School Lunch Program (NSLP) has been fueling students for success for 75 years. Students can enjoy the convenience of a healthy school lunch for just $2.80 for elementary students, $2.90 for middle and $3.00 for high school students. Some students may qualify for free or reduced-price meals.
