SPECIAL ELECTION: 2 public measures to be voted on in Newton

Registered voters decide ‘yes’ or ‘no’ on $1.6M park bond, whether council takes over WaterWorks

Newton residents have two special elections to participate in on Sept. 13.

Two public measures must be voted on during that time. The first public measure decides the fate of a $1.6 million bond that will go towards the construction of a new clubhouse, improvements at Maytag Pool, installation of pickle ball courts at Aurora Park and the establishment of a dog park at Sunset Park.

The second public measure will decide whether Newton WaterWorks will transfer governance from its current board of trustees to the city council. The board requested the city take over governing the WaterWorks earlier this year after an interim management stint proved to be successful.

Precincts/polling locations are limited to Newton residents and are listed here:

• Newton City Ward 1, Precinct 1: Jasper County Church of Christ (former Union Hall), 1813 First St. N.

• Newton City Ward 1, Precinct 2: Park Centre, 500 First St. N.

• Newton City Ward 2, Precinct 1: Immanuel Baptist Church, 1300 N. Fourth Ave. E.

• Newton City Ward 2, Precinct 2: St. Luke United Methodist Church, 501 E. 19th St. N.

• Newton City Ward 3, Precinct 1: First Baptist Church, 620 S. Eighth Ave. E.

• Newton City Ward 4, Precinct 1: Jasper County Administration Building, 300 W. Fourth St. N.

• Newton City Ward 4, Precinct 2: American Legion Post 111, 1101 W. Fourth St. S.

Here are the two questions registered voters in Newton will be asked:

Public Measure B: “Shall the City of Newton, Jasper County, State of Iowa, enter into a loan agreement and issue general obligation bonds in an amount not exceeding $1,600,000 for the purpose of paying the cost, to that extent, of (1) demolition of the existing Westwood Golf Course clubhouse and construction of a new clubhouse structure, including related site improvements; (2) construction and/or installation of improvements to the Maytag Pool; (3) construction and installation of pickle ball courts at the existing Aurora Park; and (4) construction of a dog park at the existing Sunset Park?”

Public Measure C: “Shall the Newton WaterWorks Board of Trustees be dissolved and the city council of Newton, Iowa, in the county of Jasper, Iowa, assume the obligations of managing and contributing the Newton WaterWorks?”
