Newton woman injures hand and arm in fireworks incident

Victim was driven to hospital and was later airlifted for further treatment

A 36-year-old Newton woman has severe injuries caused by fireworks on July 4 and had to be airlifted from the local hospital to receive further medical treatment.

At approximately 9:18 p.m., Newton Police Department was dispatched to the 2300 block of North Seventh Avenue East to respond to a report of a woman severely injured by fireworks. While traveling to the residence, officers were informed the victim was being driven to a local hospital in a personal vehicle.

When police arrived at the hospital, officers confirmed the woman had a severe injury to her hand and arm. Witnesses said the victim was standing in the middle of the street and lit large mortar-type firework and held it over her head. The mortar eventually exploded. The case is under investigation.
