Mattes advances to national scholarship level

Adam Mattes of Newton, has applied for a National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association’s (NIAAA) scholarship that recognizes the distinguished scholastic, leadership and citizenship. The scholarship recognizes the attributes of high school student athletes and the importance of high school athletics in each student’s life.

Mattes has advanced to the national scholarship level for the NIAAA scholarship and received district and state awards from the IHSADA convention March 27.

Students were asked to submit an application that included academic achievements, athletic achievements, leadership roles, community service work, and write an essay, along with recommendations. The Central Iowa High School Athletic Directors Association (IHSADA) then chose Mattes and Grace Benson of Newton, as the winners of the central Iowa district.

They then went on to compete for the state of Iowa Scholarship through the IHSADA. Mattes was selected as the male recipient for the state of Iowa for the IHSADA scholarship. His application was then sent to compete at the regional level which included winners from Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin and Michigan (U.S. Section 4). Mattes was chosen as the male winner for the region (section 4). He now continues on to compete against the other seven regional winners for the National scholarship for the NIAAA. The winner will be announced later this year.
