At the Oct. 9 meeting of the Grinnell Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution, eight members cleaned 40 to 50 works of art from the collection of the Centre for Arts & Artists at 501 W. Third St. N. in Newton.

The mission of the Centre for Arts and Artists is to “engage the community in building appreciation of creativity.” The CAA, a non-profit organization with one paid staff member, provides studios for working artists, clay and kiln rooms, homes for arts organizations and civic groups, classes, an artists’ gift shop and classroom and meeting areas. For more than a decade, the CAA has provided meeting space for Grinnell Chapter NSDAR.

Each year on or near Oct. 11, DAR members celebrate the National DAR Day of Service in honor of our Society’s founding Oct. 11, 1890. In order to thank the CAA for the use of their meeting space, Grinnell DAR devoted our day of service to them. Centre director, Linda Klepinger, asked us to help clean their works of art. Several years ago the Jasper Community Foundation gifted the CAA an impressive art collection. The collection includes Bien Chromolith Audubon prints, copper engraved botanical prints by Basil Besler, Japanese woodblock prints, historic maps, oil paintings, and etchings. Klepinger instructed us on how to safely clean the glass on the works of art and provided us with materials (Sparkle, paper towels, and Swiffers) for cleaning glass and dusting.

Grinnell Chapter DAR is grateful to the CAA for their continued support of our chapter and we hope to support them as much as possible in the future.
