5-month-old baby dies in Newton home daycare

Rescue efforts unsuccessful, police investigating the death

Police are investigating the death of a 5-month-old infant that was reported unconscious and not breathing Friday, July 30 at a home daycare in Newton.

At approximately 11:11 a.m., officers from Newton Police Department and paramedics from the Newton Fire Department were called to the 700 block of East 12th Street Place North.

Efforts to rescue the infant had begun and were continued by officers, paramedics and then MercyOne Newton emergency personnel, but were ultimately unsuccessful.

With the assistance of the day care employees the remaining children in the day care were sent home with their parents, Newton police said in a press release.

It was learned the child was asleep for a nap before being discovered unresponsive. The case is still under investigation. An autopsy is scheduled to take place at the Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner.

Department of Human Services has been notified of the case since it involves a child.
