Habitat for Humanity purchased three properties from the City of Newton on July 19 to be redeveloped into single-family homes.
All three homes are committed to be valued between $145,000 and $168,000.
The Newton City Council held a public hearing to discuss the matter and received no comments. Councilwoman Evelyn George said the proposed action is “very exciting,” particularly because volunteers are currently finishing a Habitat For Humanity home in Newton.
In June, the Newton News reported the Jasper County Habitat For Humanity — which consolidated with Greater Des Moines Habitat For Humanity — began building its first home since it integrated operations with Polk and Dallas Counties. The home is under construction near the 900 block of North Fourth Avenue West.
“To look ahead and see three more go into a neighborhood that are in an affordable price range is just what we need here in the community,” George said.
Newton Mayor Mike Hansen added, “It is, indeed. I had the good fortune to attend the public opening … at the site at North Fourth Avenue West. Those folks are go-getters and they’re really excited about the opportunities that they have to bring those affordable houses. Glad to have ‘em.”
According to city documents, the three properties are located in the 500 block of South Second Avenue West and South Fourth Avenue West. Notices were printed so that interested parties could submit proposals for the lots. Nearby property owners were also mailed notices, city documents say.
Habitat For Humanity purchased each property for $5,000, for a grand total of $15,000.
