The generosity of another anonymous sponsor will allow all children who want to participate in the Newton YMCA’s fall soccer program to do so for free.
Lucas Hughes, CEO of the Newton YMCA, told Newton News that kids in sixth grade and under — including those in pre-K — are eligible to register for the upcoming soccer league, which is scheduled to run Sept. 18-Oct. 16.
Earlier this year, the YMCA received a substantial Monsignor McCann Community Fund grant to allow all children to participate in the spring soccer program. As a result, about 447 kids registered for the sport.
“Typically, we have about 250,” Hughes said. “So it was pretty cool!”
Compared to the year before, YMCA was able to sign up 197 additional kids. The sponsor for fall soccer saw the positive outcome from the $10,000 grant and decided to follow suit with their own contribution, Hughes said.
“The sponsor approached me after the spring season was over and said, ‘We’d love to do the exact same thing for the fall,’” he said. “So, hopefully, we’re looking to get at least 500 kids this time around throughout Jasper County.”
