Pending the board of supervisors’ approval, Jasper County could become the first county in Iowa to declare itself a Second Amendment sanctuary.
If designated a gun sanctuary by the all-Republican Jasper County Board of Supervisors at its upcoming meeting July 6, the county could oppose the enforcement of any federal and state legislation it deems would infringe on the constitutionally protected rights for people to keep and bear arms.
Supporters of gun sanctuaries have targeted regulations such as assault-style weapon bans, universal background checks and red flag laws.
A copy of the resolution declaring Jasper County to be a gun sanctuary was included the supervisors agenda, which was uploaded online on Friday, July 2.

The resolution is an exact copy drafted in 2020 by the Iowa Firearms Coalition in collaboration with National Rifle Association’s “lobbying arm” the Institute for Legislative Action (NRA-ILA).
