Police charge suspect with first-degree murder

A Newton man died Tuesday night from injuries sustained in an altercation with another man, who has since been arrested and charged with first-degree murder.

At about 7:19 p.m., Newton Police Department received a 911 call of a fight in progress near the 900 block of North Sixth Avenue East.

Randall Clark Mikesell Jr., 41, was found unresponsive and laying on the ground with severe bleeding from his torso, police say.

Witnesses told police he had been assaulted with a knife by another male. Mikesell was pronounced dead at the scene.

Shane Romine Borrego, 33, of Newton, was identified and apprehended by authorities. Prior to the stabbing, Borrego had come to the nearby apartment complex to retrieve some property from Mikesell, police said.

At some point during the meeting, an altercation ensued resulting in the stabbing.

Borrego was arrested, charged with first-degree murder and transported to Jasper County Jail.
