Inmate dies at Newton Correctional Facility

An inmate at the Newton Correctional Facility has died, according to a press release from the Iowa Department of Corrections late Sunday evening.

Ronald J. Calvert was pronounced dead due to an unexpected medical emergency at 11:44 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 26 at the Newton Correctional Facility. Foul play was not suspected, according to the report. Calvert was 77 years old at the time of his death.

An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.

Calvert had been serving a 25-year sentence for the crime of second-degree sexual abuse from Floyd County. His sentence began on May 6, 2014.
