Christmas morning fire claims life of Grinnell woman

A 71-year-old female has died following an early morning fire on Christmas Day.

According to a press release from the Grinnell Fire Department, fire crews were called at 2:17 a.m. Dec. 25 to a trailer home on First Avenue in Grinnell.

The Grinnell Police Department was first on the scene and located a burn victim inside the home. The fire was contained to the living room area of the residence. The female succumbed to injuries from the fire and was pronounced dead at the scene. The name of the victim has not been released at this time.

The fire is under investigation by the State Fire Marshal’s office but early indication shows the fire was accidental due to smoking.

The GFD was also assisted at the scene by Midwest Ambulance and Powesheik County Medical Examiner.
