‘The need was there, and the call was answered’

112 holiday meals delivered to Newton families

Abby Lamont and her “little helpers” arranged, packaged and delivered 112 holiday meals last week to families of the Newton Community School District.

“To say we are humbled and honored to be able to serve this community is an understatement,” Lamont said on the Cards House of Apparel’s Facebook page on Dec. 18. “Making this happen was not a small undertaking and would not be able to happen without our village.”

Boxes were full vegetables, ham, rolls, cookies, fruit and other goodies.

Lamont, the career center coordinator at Newton High School, has been distributing holiday meals to families since 2016. Back then, about 10 high school families enjoyed a box full of delicious food. The next year and the year after that, Lamont doubled her efforts and expanded to all the schools.

With the help of local businesses and organizations, Lamont was able to scrounge up enough funds to feed more and more families every year. In 2019, about 81 families were served meals. Lamont was ecstatic to have delivered even more meals this year and was thankful for the community’s generosity.

“Newton is one town that if you need something, no questions asked they do it for their community because they want to see their community thrive,” Lamont said. “That’s one thing I’m always impressed by. There is absolutely somebody that will step in and offer to help with no qualms.

“The need was there and the call was answered.”
