The son of William Oliver and Dolores Jean (Hulse) Simpson, Charles was born on December 27, 1948 in Des Moines, IA. He graduated from Southeast Polk High School and was untied in marriage to Melissa Cooper on December 27, 1969. They made their home on the east side of Des Moines before settling in Mingo to raise their family. They were married for 37 years until Melissa’s passing in 2007.

In 2009, Charlie and Cindy Ragan met on a blind date set up by a mutual friend, John. They married 5 months later on November 16, 2009 and lived in Indianola for a time before moving to Milo. Their connection was amazing! So many travels to Baltimore, MD and Louisville, KY. Grandkids there too! Fishing and dining, rock tumbling came a few years ago and he loved it. Then walking sticks were being made which he had a few to finish. Retirement was great!

Charlie worked in construction before working for Metro Waste Authority. He worked as a heavy equipment operator at the Metro Park East Landfill for 30 years, retiring in 2011 after making many friends on the job.

Charlie was a member of the Iowa Roller Club and raised show Pigeons for many years, traveling to shows across the Midwest. He had a small hobby farm while living in Mingo and always had animals to care for. Charlie loved to fish and be outdoors and he enjoyed watching sports, always rooting for the underdog. He especially liked NASCAR and visited tracks at Bristol, Charlotte, and Texas to watch races with his sons. Charlie loved to travel with his family. His greatest joy was watching his kids in their activities and then later in life watching his grandkids. Even if he couldn’t attend, he would love to hear how their games went. He was very proud of his family.

Survivors include his wife, Cindy Simpson; children, Kelly Simpson, Kenny (Jill) Simpson; step-children, Brian Sutton, Brad Sutton; grandchildren, Samantha, Trevor, Skylur, Konner, Kaden, Karlee, Gabby, Julian and several great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife Melissa Simpson; sons, Keith and Kevin Simpson; daughter, Denise Simpson; parents, Bill and Dolores Simpson; and sister, Carol Pietro.
