Mingo — Volunteers in Mingo distributed more than 200 seedlings to community members in Mingo, Ira and Valeria at the Mingo Fireman’s Breakfast May 22. Seedlings were ordered from the Iowa State Forest Nursery through a partnership between Trees Forever, Iowa Department of Natural Resources and Green State Credit Union.
“We were able to offer more than 15 species of trees and shrubs for residents of Mingo, Ira and Valeria which were hit hard by the derecho of 2020,” local coordinator Bill Berriman said. “Oaks, hickories, sycamores and a range of shrubs were distributed.”
It is estimated that hundreds of thousands of mature trees were damaged and removed due to the storm. Well cared for and watered seedlings will start providing benefits immediately and those benefits will grow with time.
