Baxter boys struggle to score in losses to Meskwaki, Madrid

MESKWAKI SETTLEMENT — Baxter's boys' basketball team couldn't get going offensively last week during a pair of losses.

The Bolts opened the week with a 49-41 loss to Meskwaki Settlement School during Iowa Star Conference South Division play on Dec. 8. They shot just 33 percent from the floor, made only 3-of-13 from long range and missed seven free throws.

Baxter (2-3 overall, 1-2 in the conference) trailed by three after three but the Warriors (3-0, 3-0) outscored the Bolts 17-12 in the fourth to pull away.

Cody Damman scored 14 points to lead the way, while Nate McMinamen added eight points and 11 rebounds.

Carson Scroggins chipped in seven points, five rebounds, four blocks and two steals, Rory Heer had six points, five rebounds and two assists and Treyton Travis scored four points. Kael Johnston swiped three steals.

Madrid 54, Baxter 47

BAXTER — Madrid used a big third quarter to pull away from the Bolts on Dec. 10. Baxter led by two at halftime, but a 16-5 advantage in the third sent the Tigers to a 54-47 road win.

The Bolts shot 37 percent from the floor, made 7-of-28 from 3-point range and committed 17 turnovers.

Heer led the Bolts 14 points, two rebounds and three assists, Travis had 12 points, four rebounds and two assists and Damman tallied 12 points, three rebounds and three assists.

McMinamen added four points, 10 rebounds and two assists.

Gabe Peterson had 12 points and 10 rebounds to lead Madrid (2-3), which shot 21-of-41 from the floor.
