Geraldine “Gerri” Garton, 82, of Newton, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2020. A private family funeral was held Wednesday, Nov. 11 at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Baxter. Burial followed in Restland Cemetery in Baxter.
Gerri was born May 23, 1938, to Merle and Doris (Logsdon) Borts in Colfax. She graduated from Mingo Consolidated School with the class of 1956. Gerri married Doug Garton Feb. 10, 1962, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. The couple moved to Baxter where they began their family. Gerri worked as a business administrator in the insurance industry and the public schools. She was a member of the United Congregational Church of Christ in Baxter for more than 50 years. Gerri also served the church as the treasurer for many years. She helped with the local 4-H as well. Gerri loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. She also enjoyed bowling and being in bowling league for many years, gardening, flowers, cooking, being an avid Iowa Hawkeyes fan and socializing with her friends. Gerri was a very loving and caring person who loved to help others. She will be missed dearly by all family and friends.
Those left to cherish her loving memories are her children, Deb (Doug) Freese, Chris (Andrea) Garton and Troy (Lynne) Garton; grandchildren, Michael (Amanda) Freese, Jill (Scott) Dykstra, Seth (Megan) Garton, Chelsea (Dustin) Fox, Stefan Garton, Tyler Garton, Tanner Garton and Treycen Garton; great-grandchildren, Jacob, Brianna and Katelyn Freese, Autumn, Savannah, Brooklyn and Ember Dykstra and Cora Garton; sisters-in-law, Karen (Dean) Flora and Norma Jean Richeson; many nieces, nephews and close friends.
Gerri was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Doug; grandson, Lincoln Garton; and brother-in-law, Stan Richeson.
