Ruby Maxine Van Wyk was born Nov. 16, 1924, to Paul and Gertie (Van Genderen) Van Der Kamp in Sully. She passed away Oct. 31, 2020, at the St. Francis Nursing Home in Grinnell. Ruby lived in the Sully area her entire life and attended country schools through the eighth grade. When she was young, she washed milk bottles at the Van Der Kamp dairy.
On Nov. 17, 1943, she was united in marriage to LaVerne Van Zante at her parents’ home. To this union, they were blessed with three children, Barb, Bev and Brad. After LaVerne’s passing in 1976, Ruby married Ralph John Van Wyk, Feb. 10, 1978. In 1991, Ruby and Ralph moved to Sully where they had a meter reading route for many years.
Ruby was a wonderful homemaker. She would spend hours working in her vegetable garden and took great pride in her flowers. She milked cows and also raised chickens, butchered them and sold eggs. She loved coloring, camping, volunteering, traveling and going to the State Fair. Ruby was truly the best grandmother a person could have! She was a faithful member of the First Reformed Church in Sully.
Ruby is survived by her children and step-children, Barb and Paul Fynaardt of Oskaloosa, Bev and Rod Van Maanen of Lynnville, Brad Van Zante of Grinnell, Phyllis (deceased) and David Zylstra of Pella, Delwin and Karen Van Wyk of Newton and Ruth Renaud of Sully; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren; her sister, Neva Lanser; and her sister-in-law, Dorothy Van Wyk.
