Newton volleyball goes 1-3 at DMC tournament

URBANDALE — Newton's volleyball team recorded another victory over conference rival Grinnell at the Des Moines Christian tournament on Thursday.

But that would be the only win the Cardinals would get as they went 1-3 on the night with losses to Class 3A No. 15 Des Moines Christian, Pella Christian and Van Meter.

"We did some very nice things tonight." Newton coach Kim Florke said. "I think we can take some positives from tonight in spite of the losses."

Newton downed Grinnell (0-6) 21-18, 21-15. Senior Kate Callaghan led the Cardinals with 18 assists, two kills and three digs and senior Meg Callaghan added four kills, two digs and two aces.

Senior Kynnedei Terpstra finished with a team-best five kills and a pair of digs, senior Jerrica McGuire had four kills and two digs, senior Tess Brunsmann added three kills and freshman Kadance Ahn chipped in two kills and was 11-of-11 in serves.

Newton lost to Des Moines Christian and Van Meter in three sets but was swept by Pella Christian.

DMC (10-5) defeated Newton 21-23, 21-11, 15-8. Kate Callaghan led the way with 20 assists, six digs, three kills and two blocks.

Brunsmann had a team-best seven kills, Ahn finished with four kills and nine digs and Terpstra tallied five kills and five digs. Meg Callaghan had three kills, McGuire put down two kills and senior Katie McConnell added a team-best 12 digs.

Newton (7-9) again took an early lead over Van Meter (10-3) but couldn't finish. The Bulldogs defeated the Cardinals 21-23, 21-16, 15-6. Kate Callaghan finished with 20 assists, 11 digs, four kills and two blocks to lead the way.

Terpstra had a team-best six kills and also finished with six digs and two aces, McGuire put down six kills and had two digs and Meg Callaghan added four kills and four blocks.

"I thought Kynnedei Terpstra played the best she has all year, and we blocked the best we have all season," Florke said. "Consistency once again hurt us."

Ahn had two kills and seven digs, Brunsmann put down two kills and had three digs, McConnell had six digs and senior Riley Davidson tallied three digs.

The Cardinals were 45-of-47 in serves. Ahn was 11-of-11 in serves, Kate Callaghan was 8-of-8 and Brusmann served 12-of-13.

Pella Christian (8-6) defeated Newton 21-8, 21-17. Kate Callghan led the way with 10 assists, three kills and three digs.

Brunsmann put down three kills, Terpstra had two kills and three digs and McGuire finished with two kills and two blocks. Meg Callaghan had two kills, Ahn tallied six digs and McConnell had five digs.

The Cardinals host Norwalk at 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday in Newton.
