THORNBURG — Lynnville-Sully’s Hawks finished of the regular season with a road win on Wednesday night. The Hawks defeated host Tri-County 8-4 in the South Iowa Cedar League finale for Lynnville-Sully.
With the victory, the Hawks secured second place in the SICL with an 8-3 record. Lynnville-Sully was eighth in the conference (6-10) in 2019. HLV is SICL champion in 2020 at 11-0.
A five-run third inning boosted the Hawks to a 6-0 lead over the Trojans. Tri-County (2-9, 2-8 SICL) closed the gap to 6-3 in the fifth and sixth innings.
Lynnville-Sully added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh frame. The Hawks held the Trojans to one run in their half of the final inning to win.
Senior Blaize Kuhlmann led the Hawks at the plate with a single and a triple. Junior Payton Van Wyk drove in two runs with two singles and freshman Reese Dunsbergen doubled and had two RBIs.
Hitting a single apiece were senior Bray Noun Harder and sophomores Owen Norrish and Braden Alberts. Eighth-grader Corder Noun Harder drove in a run.
Bray Noun Harder was the starting pitcher for the Hawks and worked 3 1/3 innings of scoreless baseball. He allowed two hits, walked two and struck out two.
Van Wyk pitched 1 1/3 innings, allowing one run on two hits, one walk and one hit batter and he struck out one. Alberts worked 2 1/3 innings, giving up three runs on five hits and two walks and striking out three.
Lynnville-Sully (9-7) open Class 1A District 11 play on Saturday. Top-ranked Martensdale-St. Marys will host a district doubleheader on Saturday at St. Marys.
The Hawks play Twin Cedars at 4:30 p.m. at the St. Marys Baseball Field. Martensdale-St. Marys plays Melcher-Dallas in the nightcap at 7 p.m. The winners face each other at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in St. Marys.
