The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union released the softball regional pairings on Thursday. All five area programs learned what their paths to the state tournament will be.
And for Newton, the Cardinals are in Class 4A, Region 3 with top seed and third-ranked ADM of Adel, No. 10 Norwalk, No. 11 Bondurant-Farrar and No. 12 Winterset.
Newton (0-13) opens the postseason against the 11th ranked Lady Jays (10-3) at 7 p.m. on July 16 in Bondurant. The winner of that game plays Winterset (7-6) at 7 p.m. on July 18 in Winterset.
ADM (9-2) gets a bye on the other side of the bracket. Norwalk (11-4) faces Des Moines Hoover (2-12) in the quarterfinals and that winner faces ADM in the regional semifinals.
The 4A Region 3 championship is set for 7 p.m. on July 21 at a site to be determined.
Class 1A No. 4 Lynnville-Sully earned the top seed in 1A Region 6. The Hawks (12-1) have a first-round bye and will face either Tri-County (2-10) or Keota (0-9) in the quarterfinals at 7 p.m. on July 15 in Sully.
The regional semifinals are at 7 p.m. on July 17 in Sully. The Hawks' potential opponents include Sigourney (10-1), Moravia (6-3), English Valleys (6-4) or Montezuma (7-6).
The other side of the 1A Region 6 bracket features No. 14 Winfield-Mount Union (7-2) and North Mahaska (6-7). The regional final is set for 7 p.m. on July 20 at a site to be determined.
The other 1A program is Baxter and the Bolts will play in Region 5.
The Bolts (5-3) open postseason play at home against BGM (2-7) at 7 p.m. on July 13 in Baxter. The winner of that game plays Grand View Christian (9-5) in the regional quarterfinals at 7 p.m. on July 15 in Baxter.
Baxter's most likely regional final opponent would be No. 15 Martensdale-St. Marys (10-4). That game is set for 7 p.m. on July 17 in Martensdale. Other potential opponents include Melcher-Dallas (10-5) and Murray (3-6).
The 1A Region 5 championship game is at 7 p.m. on July 20 at a site to be determined. The other side of the bracket features top seed and No. 1 ranked Collins-Maxwell (12-1).
Colfax-Mingo also hosts a playoff game at 7 p.m. on July 15 in Colfax as part of the 2A Region 4 bracket. The Tigerhawks (9-3) host East Marshall (11-1) in a rematch of last year's regional semifinal game won by the Mustangs in walk-off fashion.
The Colfax-Mingo/East Marshall winner gets either No. 11 Interstate 35 (4-3), Pleasantville (5-8) or Pella Christian (5-7) in the regional semifinals at 7 p.m. on July 17 in Truro.
Third-ranked Ogden (12-2) is the top seeded team the bracket and a potential regional final opponent for the Tigerhawks. The other potential opponents include Grundy Center (3-4) and South Hamilton (4-5). The regional final is at 7 p.m. on July 20 at a site to be determined.
Prairie City-Monroe is in 3A Region 4 and the Mustangs play at Nevada at 7 p.m. on July 15. The Mustangs (3-8) and Cubs (8-4) played earlier this season and will play again on July 9 as part of the Heart of Iowa Conference regular season games.
The winner of the PCM/Nevada game gets either Davis County (2-4) or Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont (8-8) in the regional semifinals at 7 p.m. on July 17 in Nevada.
Third-ranked Albia (11-0) is the top seed on the other side of the bracket. The other teams on that side of the bracket include Chariton (0-7), Clarke (7-3) and Centerville (6-4).
The regional finals will be at 7 p.m. on July 20 at a site to be determined.
