AMES — Jenna Smith, from Jasper County was awarded the Smith Family 4-H Scholarship through the Iowa 4-H Foundation this spring.

The Iowa 4-H Foundation has announced the recipients of over 90 Iowa 4-H scholarships valued at more than $100,000. More than 400 applications were submitted and scholarships have been awarded to recipients from 54 counties across the state of Iowa with a wide variety of 4-H experiences.

Leadership roles have been the most important aspect of 4-H for Smith that has given her confidence and helped her achieve roles in other organizations. 4-H also gave her the opportunity to hone communications skills and explore Iowa State during State 4-H Conference. This fall, Smith will be attending Iowa State University studying ag communications and animal science.

“As I continue to get older, I realized how valuable it is to raise kids in 4-H,” Smith said. “My personal goal is to get as many kids in 4-H as possible, because I truly believe it prepares you for life.”

“We are so proud of our 4-H scholarship recipients, knowing that they have had challenges to overcome this year,” Emily Saveraid, executive director of the Iowa 4-H Foundation, said. “These scholarships honor and reward hard work and dedication. We are thankful for the many scholarship donors who fund these important opportunities for Iowa 4-H’ers.”
