Man arrested after attempting to flee from NPD

A Newton man has been arrested after leading Newton police officers on a high-speed chase late Thursday night.

According to the Newton Police Department, officers responded to a call at Cline Tool for people arguing in the parking lot. Upon arrival Travis W. Nichol, 29, was seen standing over a female as if he was punching her.

After seeing the marked squad vehicle, Nichol jumped in his vehicle and drove through the grass to the street. Officers activated the emergency lights and sirens to initiate a stop but Nichol continued through a stop sign.

Nichol drove from the 2000 to 2500 block of North 11th Avenue East with speeds reaching 70 miles per hour. He finally came to a stop after his vehicle was unable to move after driving onto railroad tracks.

Nichol was charged with eluding and issued citations for failure to properly stop at railroad crossing, failure to use headlamps, driving on the wrong side of a two-way highway, failure to provide proof of financial liability, driving while license suspended and three for failure to obey stop sign at 11:29 p.m. in the 2000 block of North 11th Avenue East.

He was taken to the Jasper County Jail where he is being held on no bond and is awaiting his first court appearance on May 20.
