Another community event has been canceled due to COVID-19.
Organizers of the Newton High School Alumni Weekend announced Tuesday the annual celebration planned for June 12 and 13 has been canceled. Public health concerns surrounding COVID-19, as well as travel restrictions, impacted the Newton High School Alumni Association’s final decision.
Last week, event coordinators of Newton Fest, which often overlaps with the NHS Alumni Weekend festivities, announced it would cancel activities, too. Again, local organizers cited the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent concerns surrounding public health as the main motivator for the cancellation.
However, Newton Alumni News said in a Facebook post that 2020 “will not be a year without celebrations of Red Pride.”
Conditions permitting, the NHS Alumni Association will look into hosting one or more all-alumni events to coincide with Homecoming Weekend this fall, the start of the 2020-2021 school year.
More details will be announced this summer, the association said.
