Newton High Cardinal baseball players and coaches held a camp for the Newton Little League Majors and Minors players on March 7 at Newton High’s lower gym.

The Minors — ages 8-10 — and Majors — ages 10-12 — teams had tryouts during the day camp.

Jeff Price, Newton Youth Baseball president, said Newton baseball is on hold right now because of the coronavirus health crisis. Practices and games are suspended the leagues’ use of the city field through the end of April.

Price said Little League International has also recommended the suspension or delay of Little League activities until May 11.

“We had a great turnout for the camp,” Newton High head baseball coach Dustin Brisel said. “Unfortunately, things are suspended right now because of the pandemic. We’re hoping the youth baseball and our high school baseball seasons will be played things improve.”

Spring practices for the Majors and Minors were to have begun March 30-31. Games were scheduled to get underway on April 27.

Price has been providing any updates on the Newton Iowa Little League Baseball Facebook page along with some drills which can be done at home.

“Our goal is to have some sort of baseball in Newton this summer if it is deemed safe,” Price said.
