Newton Penguins head into YMCA swimming postseason

Members of the Newton YMCA Newton Penguins swim team are into their postseason. Penguin swimmers have qualified in four different meets to take place the next few weeks.

The first meet is Saturday’s Greater Iowa Swim League state meet in Carroll.

The Iowa YMCA state meet is March 7 for the boys and March 8 for the girls in Marshalltown.

On March 21-22 are the YMCA Regionals at Wellmark YMCA in Des Moines.

The Midwest Regional Swim Meet is March 28-29 at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.

Here are previews of Newton qualifiers and events for each swim meet provided by Newton YMCA Aquatics Director Nick Shelton:

GISL (Greater Iowa

Swim League) State Meet

Feb. 29 in Carroll

The boys (age 9-10) medley and freestyle relay teams of Jackson Riney, Hudson Meyer, Keegan Bretthauer and Kaden Marshall are seeded second.

Of the 11 individual events for the boys, they are seeded in the top five swimmers in eight of those events. That includes a first-place seed for Riney in the 100 freestyle and a second-place seed for Meyer in the 100 backstroke.

The girls (age 11-12) medley relay teams of Alexandra Riney, Anna DeVries, Avery Meyer and Paige Benson are seeded second with the team of Tori White, Harper Barton, Izzy Lane and Hailey Dickerson seeded a close third.

The girls (age 11-12) freestyle relay teams of Alexandra Riney, Barton, DeVries, and Benson are seeded first with the team of Avery Meyer, Dickerson, Lane and White seeded third.

In the 50-yard breaststroke and 100 breaststroke, DeVries and Barton are seeded No. 1 and No. 2, respectively. They have had a great season pushing each other to be very competitive.

The Newton Penguin girls team is seeded in the top five in 20 individual events. DeVries and Alexandra Riney have three first -place seeds in events.
