Norma Jean Miller

Feb. 24, 2020

Once upon a time, a daughter was born to John F. and Elsie E. (Culberston) Crozier. She attended a country school in Grand River and graduated from Garden Grove High School in 1956. She worked at Bankers Life Insurance and was a member of the Junior Farm Bureau where she met the love of her life, Layton Miller Sr., and they were later married on Feb. 17, 1957. To this fairytale, they added six children, Bert (Tom) Burns, Tim (Deb) Miller, Layton Jr. (Barb) Miller, Carroll (Lynda) Miller, Merrill (Colette) Miller and Marquita (Jim) Utter.

In the years following, she drove a school bus for 15 years, was a cook in the Mingo school district and worked at American Republic for 10 years. She retired and opened the NJ Florals flower shop, where Layton and she worked together for 12 years. She enjoyed reading, attending her grandchildren’s activities and was a 50-year member of the Howard Street Christian Church.

Through their 63-year marriage, their family continued to grow with the addition of 19 grandchildren with 16 spouses, 46 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. Norma is also survived by her sister, Helen (Leon) Hampton; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; and many others who call her Granny. She is preceded in death by her parents; and granddaughters, Misty Jo Long and Jennifer Greene.

A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 28 at the Howard Street Christian Church. Burial will follow at McKeever Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27 at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Howard Street Christian Church Youth.
